There’s a certain poetic justice to living in the Ravenswood area, especially if you live near 4646 N. Hermitage where the world-renown poet, Carl Sandburg, wrote his poem “Chicago.” In the poem, Sandburg called Chicago “the city of broad shoulders” and we’ll take poetic license with his words to call “Ravenswood the neighborhood of broad cultures, diverse businesses and shops, a wide variety of housing opportunities and a broad-based interest in the arts.” In addition to earning recognition for Sandburg, this thriving northwest community can also claim fame for the Old Town School of Folk Music where Joni Mitchell sang and great artists still perform in a number of cool and eclectic Ravenswood clubs, cafes and taverns.
People, especially families, are drawn to the Ravenswood area for other reasons, too. They appreciate the peacefulness of the community, huge trees, lovely green lawns, rehabbed homes and a wonderfully convenient location. There’s vibrant business and shopping right in the neighborhood, but you can also easily catch an El or the Northwestern train line and be in Chicago, that “stormy, husky, brawling city of broad shoulders,” in nothing flat.
A Full Plate (for Every Palette): As noted, the ethnic diversity in Ravenswood means that the full flavor of many cultures abounds to please varying tastes and palettes. For fabulous French food, rendezvous at the Parisian Restaurant. In the mood for Asian food and sushi? Enjoy Blue Ocean (4650 N. Clark) for sushi and Dora (2301 W. Foster) is muy bien for Mexican food, especially tacos. For all-American cuisine that rocks, head to the Rockwell Neighborhood Grill at 4631 N. Rockwell. Mike’s favorite in the Ravenswood area include Glenn’s Diner for American. It is located on the 1800 block of west Montrose. Browsing Housing: You can find whatever you’re looking for in the diverse Ravenswood area, especially if you’ve got an experienced, savvy and knowledgeable real estate broker like Michael Kaufman by your side. This predominantly residential neighborhood has many single family houses to explore, along with a large number of condominiums. Many of the buildings are old but have been kept up over the years, which means they keep their value and remain good investments. The kids (and you) will enjoy the larger lots that are available, thanks to liberal Ravenswood zoning laws.
