The old and the new are at home in Chicago’s famous Old Town. In the 60’s, this lovely yet exciting neighborhood located along N. Wells Street between Division and North Avenue, was a wild and crazy hippy hotspot. Today, it’s grown up, but not too much. Old Town still offers the best of all world’s: lovely, tree-lined side streets with Greystones and Brownstones, quaint and quirky shops and boutiques, fabulous restaurants and a lot to see and do day and night. For many semi-urban couples, families and older folks, this is a great place to live, raise a family or retire—though it isn’t all that retiring. The Lake and parks are also wonderfully close, which adds to the attraction.
Old Town is known for its art fairs, nuttiness at Zanie’s Comedy Club and as the home of the world-famous Second City improvisational group that has spawned more than its share of stars from Dan Akroyd and John Belushi to Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Tim Meadows and many more SNL favorites.
On the Menu: You’ll find all kinds of fabulous and traditional fare in Old Town. Twin Anchors never takes a ribbing for its bar-b-cue. And what about the Fireplace Inn (1535 N. Wells) for world-class burgers? And if you want Thai to die for, live it up at Tiparos Thai Cuisine (1552 Wells). Mike’s Favorites include: Old Jerusalem and his home away from home when he lived in Old Town, Topo Gigio Ristorante (on Wells, as well) for fresh and delicious pasta.. Browsing Housing: For living space, this is an unquestionably upscale and worth it to many. Some condos are available above store fronts on LaSalle and other streets, but the preponderance of residents occupy Grey- and Brownstone walk-ups, including lovely three- and four-story townhomes located on quaint side streets. Recently, Old Town has pushed westward where you’ll find stretches of newly built brick flats mixed in with single-family homes that may be more affordable. Mike Kaufman of Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty, Inc., knows this area and how to make the most out of the housing opportunities it offers. Says Mike, “You don’t have to be looking on the Gold Coast to find a real gem.”
