You might think the name “Deerfield” was selected because of the abundance of the bounding, beautiful animals. And you’d be right. This lovely, verdant and vibrant community (village actually) dates back to 1853 and the Potawatomie nation. A lot has changed since then, but the population of 18,400 still enjoy the ideal blend of superb suburban living and the conveniences and amenities of a cool, urban, “we’re happening” lifestyle. Public schools get an A. High school kids attend excellent Deerfield High School and kids like Ferris Buehler who want to skip school and head downtown have easy access via I-294.
Those who enjoy the outdoors will love playing golf, (award-winning courses are par for the course). You can bike or jog along a myriad of paths and there are other public and private recreational areas to enjoy. The Sachs Recreation Center offers an indoor pool, tennis courts, and fitness classes. Meanwhile, there’s Deerfield Square a.k.a. “The Commons” for those who love to shop til’ they drop. There are bargains to be found in Deerfield where you get more for your dollar.
Food for Thought
Let’s start off with a nice place to mangiaItaliano, right off Lake Cook Rd at Ristorante Abruzzo. Other stick to your rib foods, including ribs themselves and the best BBQ around found at Carsons’. For lighter fare, you’ll sing praises of the Rhapsody Café and Michael Kaufman, elite eater that he is, highly recommends the Upper Crust Bagel Co. for lox, bagels, cream cheese, onions and tomato. (Wow!) If you’ve got a multi-generational crowd to please, you’ll dig Teddy Fabz at 663 Lake Cook Rd. Older folks will find the burgers fab and the kids will love the chicken fingers and toasted cheese.
Housing Options
One of the beautiful things about trying to find a home in Deerfield is there’s lots for everybody and we mean that literally and figuratively. Proximity a little bit west and north of the Lake makes housing is more affordable here, but you’d still classify the whole village as “upscale.” Talk to Michael Kaufman, who knows the area and opportunities well. He can show you single family homes: average price right now $525,000; townhomes and condominiums—in a variety of styles to suit your living pleasure. Many good potential homes are within walking distance of downtown.
