This north side neighborhood has a proud past, a lively (and very livable present) and a bright future. It was settled by German, Polish and Ukrainian immigrants in the late 1800s. Today, historical houses remain and the flavor of its past is captured and reflected not only in the quaint nature of the neighborhood, but some of the most authentic European restaurants you’ll find anywhere. You’ll also appreciate the warm friendly feel of the area where mom and pop shops still exist, people still greet each other enthusiastically, and church is an important aspect of life. Three ornate, European churches still remain the focus of the area and the center of its spiritual life.
Even though tradition is strong here, a younger generation has been attracted to the area by the affordability of the housing and convenient proximity to the Loop and O’Hare via the CTA. A lot of redevelopment has occurred; popular clubs have sprung up; there are galleries and places to shop and their numbers are increasing. Plus, count on plenty of trendy boutiques and bars to emjoy. Music groups come from places far and wide to perform at hot spots, including the Empty Bottle and the Dark Room.
On the Menu: From A to Z, the Ukrainian Village has your taste buds and preferences covered. Try Ameer Kabob, Banger’s & Lace, China Court, Jimmy Johns, Kai Sushi, Nando Milano Trattoria, Sweet Cakes, Village and Yuzu Sushi & Robata Grill. Of course, if you want to go super Ukranian there’s Saks Ukranian Village Restaurant and Lounge on West Chicago. One of Mike’s favorite places for food is Mexique for French-Mexican fusion. Browsing Housing: The big attraction in this neighborhood is how much it really resembles a European village with quaint homes and quiet streets. This old-world community has lots of new opportunities for housing too and Mike Kaufman of Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty, Inc., knows precisely where the unusual opportunities lie. Today, doors open to many living choices, including red brick style homes, large apartment buildings, two- and three-flats and ample condominiums. Affordability is the key to this area and Mike can help you unlock the real estate finds and treasures. It will be his absolute pleasure to help.
